We have had a fantastic week after the excitement of the snow last week with our slightly delayed 'Eco Week'.

We have been using the book 'One Plastic Bag' in our English and Science/Topic lessons all week and the children have really embraced exploring a story from another culture.

We have acted out the story and re-ordered some muddled up pictures to help us think about what happens when and thought of some terrific adjectives to make our speaking and writing much more interesting. We finished the week with a 'Big Write' retelling of the story and these look brilliant - I am looking forward to reading them over the weekend!

We have also thought about different materials and created some lovely 'Recycling' posters too.

Thank you to everyone who donated lots of plastic for our recycling art afternoon today!
The children chose what they would like to do and we are so impressed with what they managed to create from all the 'rubbish' we were given.

ECO WEEK HOME LEARNING

For your home learning this week I would like you to choose an activity from the grid below to complete.

Find something in your house which is eco friendly. It could be something that helps the environment or something we use to reuse or recycle something we might throw away as rubbish.

Draw and explain what it is used for.

Materials Hunt!
In your house, find:
5 things made from wood
5 things made from glass
5 things made from metal

Draw a small picture of each object.

Make a poster explaining how we can be more eco-friendly.
Don’t forget posters need to be bright, colourful and clear!

Get Creative!
Make something old into something new – reuse or recycle something you no longer need into something else!

Don't forget our Great British Spring Clean on Tuesday 13th March

Also, please return any parents evening slips by Wednesday 14th March so we can try to allocate a time that suits you.

** We hope you are managing to stay safe **

** and warm in this freezing weather! **

As we have not been able to get into school for a few days now, here are some activities you might like to have a go at!

Year 1 and 2:

How many adjectives can you think of to describe the snow? See if you can write some down.
Why not have a competition with someone you are spending the day with and see who can think of the most - or the most interesting!
Year 2 - can you use them in some expanded noun phrases - remember, this is 2 or more adjectives and uses a comma and the word 'and' to join them together.

Year 1 -

Can you make these numbers using objects you find around the house?
For example, to make the number 5, I might find 5 cups.
Then can you write down the numbers and how many tens and ones are in each one? You could have an adult give you some other numbers too if you want more of a challenge!

Year 2 -

What are the other multiplication facts we know for each one? Can you write them down?
For example - if we know 2 x 3 = 6 we also know 3 x 2 = 6 !

If you fancy a challenge, have an adult give you some more multiplication calculations and see if you can draw arrays to find the answers.

We have been making signs this week to keep people out of room(s) where we do not what them to go.
We talked about how to make our signs 'bossy' by using capital letters or big letters and an exclamation mark !
We also decided our signs needed to be clear and bright, to help people read them easily - and have a picture or colourful design.
We then all made signs for our bedroom doors...

In maths we have been concentrating on counting confidently, firstly to 50 but today we managed to count to 100 without looking at a 100-square! WOW!

Year 2s have been making 'equal groups' to practice multiplying numbers using repeated addition - here is some careful thinking by Jack and Samuel to prove the calculation

4 x 5 = 20
(  4 groups of 5      or       4 5's       or       5 + 5 + 5 + 5  )

Thank you to the parents and carers that joined us for the e-safety share this morning - we enjoyed having you all in the classroom working with us!

Dotty was in the Golden Book this week for always putting 100% into everything she does - especially this week when she had a nasty fall and hurt herself but still carried on trying her best and doing so with a smile!

Due Thursday 1st February 2018

Our topic this term is ‘Wonderful Water’ so for your home learning this week I would like you to think about where we see water around us and what things we might use it for.

Write or draw your ideas, or ask a grown-up to help you print out some pictures if you like.
You could think about where or how water is used in your house or where you might see it in nature, or in other places around the world.

Friday, 19 January 2018

Following on from our work on 2D shapes last week, we have been looking at 3D shapes this week in maths.

We have been learning the names of some 3D shapes and went for a walk around school to see which 'real-life' objects we could find.......

Can you name the 3D shapes?

To fit in with our topic, we have discussed under-sea worlds this week and have practised writing lists of our ideas before planning and creating our own map of the lake in our story: 'The Lonely Sea Monster'.

Here are some of our lists of ideas and initial plans - and then the finished neat map, including a key, underneath!

Home Learning
Due Thursday 25th January

Over the past 2 weeks we have been thinking about 2D and 3D shapes in Maths.

Your home learning task this week is to go on a hunt for some 2D and 3D shapes, either at home or whilst out and about!

Please either take photographs, draw or make a list of what you find and where you found it.

Year 2 – how can you sort some of the shapes into groups and label each group?
HINT – think about the properties of the shapes - for example – you could put all the 3D shapes with a curved face together!

Friday, 12 January 2018

In English this term we will be thinking about 'information texts' - can you think of some ways we can learn new things or get more information about something?

We have begun by looking at labels and signs - here are some examples from around the school:

We have also read some facts about sea creatures and labelled some drawings and have created some lovely clear signs to help give directions for a lost sea monster!

Our maths this week has been focusing on 2D ('flat') shapes and their properties.
Can you remember the names of the shapes we have been using?
How many sides (edges) and corners (vertices) they each have?
Can you talk about the length of each side?

Here we are playing a game where we need to match the shape to it's name - but all the cards are face down so we also need to use our memory to remember where each one is!

We have had a great start to our new topic - 'Wonderful Water' and have come up with some really interesting questions we would like to find out the answers to, such as

"How does the water get in the taps?"
and
"How do the sun and the rain make a rainbow?"

In the Golden Book this week were Horace and Logan - well done!
Horace has been a super-star in the classroom already this term, always trying his best with his learning and he always checks with Mrs Flynn to see if she needs any help with classroom jobs.
Logan has had a super 'can-do' attitude towards his learning and school this week and is always looking to challenge himself - a great example of 'Growth Mindset' !

Due Thursday 18th January 2018

This week we have been thinking about signs and labels in English.
Your home learning task this week is to go on a hunt for some different signs and labels, either at home or whilst out and about!

Please either take photographs, draw or make a list of what you find and where you found it - we would love to be able to put some interesting examples up in the classroom with the signs and labels we found in school!

Friday, 8 December 2017

It has been a busy week of challenges to show how much we have learned this term - everyone has been working so hard and has had a good go at using and applying what they know, well done!

We have been working really hard on our Christmas Play also - everyone has learned their lines and we are impressed with the acting and singing skills of all of the cast.
We are really looking forward to showing everyone on Thursday - we hope lots of you will be able to come and see us perform on the big stage then!

Please could all costumes be in school on Monday 11th for our dress rehearsal.

As we have had such a busy few days, we have also had a few treats this week!

On Thursday Mr Mack (who helps us do PE with Mr Knights) showed us some of his boxing skills and taught us some moves too!

To conclude our 'Journeys' topic, today we had a special pyjama and teddy day to watch a Christmas film with a 'travelling' theme ........

We created our own tickets and also made and had some yummy hot chocolate whilst we watched the film - thank you to Sophie's mummy for providing some biscuits too!

We will be watching the rest of the film on Monday and doing some more 'Polar Express' themed Christmas activities next week.

WELL DONE!

A HUGE WELL DONE to Iris who was the first person to complete our reading challenge for this term, winning a certificate and a prize from Mrs Flynn's prize box as well as 5 House Points!
Fantastic effort Iris, congratulations!

No home learning this week, other than to please keep practising your lines for the Christmas Play in your biggest, clearest voices.

Please also read your reading book and have your journal signed.

Friday, 1 December 2017

We have finished off our work on 'What the Ladybird Heard' this week by creating "WANTED" posters for the two thieves. We had to think about what information we needed to include to make sure people know who to look out for....

We concluded the week with a Big Write, retelling the story. I was amazed to see how much the children remembered from the story and could rewrite, almost word for word!

We have been working on learning our number bonds to 10 this week in Year 1 - these are 2 numbers that add up to 10.
One of the things we did to help us was to put 10 spots onto 2 mushrooms and then look at which 2 numbers worked together to make 10 altogether!

In Year 2 we have been practising adding and taking away (subtracting) in multiples of 10. This was tricky to start with so we used our Base 10 ('chips and peas') and 100 squares to help us, but by the end of the week we were all feeling much more confident and were attempting the hardest challenges Mrs Flynn set us!
What a great growth mindset attitude Year 2!

Home Learning
Due Thursday 7th December.

Your Home Learning this week is to spend some time learning your lines for the Christmas play!

Begin by reading them through a few times quietly to yourself to get used to what the words say. Ask an adult to help if you need to.
Then read them out loud to someone else – remember to use a big, clear voice!
Once you are confident, try it without your script!

House points will be given next week to anyone who can come to rehearsals without their lines!

*** NARRATORS – YOU WILL STILL BE ABLE TO HAVE YOUR WORDS IN FRONT OF YOU SO PLEASE DO NOT WORRY – PLEASE JUST PRACTICE SAYING THEM AS CLEARLY AND FLUENTLY AS YOU CAN! ***

Please also make sure you read your school reading book to an adult and get your reading journal signed.
