This week Year 2 have been practising counting in 10s  from different numbers and have been thinking about different ways to represent '10s' numbers. 

We found that instead of drawing 10 counters / cubes etc we could make each counter / cube worth 10 (instead of 1).

We have also been using what we know to find out what we don't know and work out number bonds to 100 using our number bonds to 10.

Year 1 have been working on adding 2 numbers together and solving 'missing number' problems using pictorial methods (drawing!) to help us.

We have been writing number sentences in different ways to, to help us remember that addition  sentences can be written in many ways. 

We have planned our new superhero stories this week - first we talked about our key ideas :

• Who is the new superhero? 
• Where is the story going to happen? 
• What is the problem in the story and how does it get sorted out?

We then transferred our ideas to a 'story mountain' and added a bit more information.

Finally, today we have been thinking about how we can make our stories as fantastic as possible when we write them next week

Mrs Flynn wrote her ideas down on the board and we helped her sort out her story so it was much more interesting and was written in sentences using the correct punctuation. 

We realised if we just quickly wrote our ideas down we missed out the 'WOW' words and lots of our sentences didn't make sense or missed out punctuation!

Home Learning
Due Thursday 29th November 

Your Home Learning is a Maths task based on what we have been doing in class this week. 

Year 1 should find the missing numbers and complete the calculations by drawing the dots onto the ladybirds.

Year 2 should complete the counting in tens number tracks - use the 100 square to help you or challenge yourself to try it with this covered up!

If you are not sure what to do please let me know before Thursday.

Finally, a letter has gone home today with details of your child's part in our Christmas performance - some ideas for costumes have been provided but please let any of us know if you are having any trouble getting together a costume and we will try to help in any way we can.

As part of our work on 'materials' in science, this week we watched a video of the story of the Three Little Pigs. 

We talked about why bricks were the best choice for a house (they are hard, strong, heavy etc) and why straw and sticks were not such good choices (fragile - can easily be broken or bent, not waterproof, could blow away etc). 

Then we had a challenge to try to build the best house possible from each of the materials!

In Maths we have moved on to writing addition and subtraction (+ and - ) number sentences, using the part whole model to help us.

In Year 2 we have been checking Mrs Flynn's calculations and proving whether or not she is right or wrong using drawings of cubes and counters to show our work. 
This has been really tricky but everyone has really persevered this week, well done!






We had some lovely home learning handed in over the past few days following last weekends Remembrance Sunday celebrations - these were some of the original and creative pieces of artwork that some children took such time and care over!

Dotty was in the Golden Book this week for an absolutely amazing Big Write last week, writing a new adventure for Traction Man - WELL DONE!


Home Learning 

Today the children wrote their final version of their Traction Man adventures they have been working on for the past week or so - it looks like he has been very busy!

Firstly we thought about our new characters ....

... then we planned our new adventures through role play ....

...and then finally we created 'story mountains' to plan the beginning, middle and end of the adventure...!

In Maths we have been continuing with addition using the part whole model from last week, working hard on writing addition (+) number sentences using these models to help us.

We have also been learning about Remembrance Sunday and thinking about how and why we mark this special date and the reasons for wearing poppies. 

We had some lovely discussions about the reasons behind the day and the children were really thoughtful and showed real compassion for those who lost their lives and their families that were left behind.

This week we have been starting to plan our own adventure for Traction Man, using what we know about the style of the original story to think about a different problem for him to 'solve', as well as new characters and settings, before writing these next week.

We have role-played our adventures using puppets...

...and come up with a story plan!

In Maths this week we have been using the 'part-whole' model to split big numbers (whole numbers) into 2 smaller ones (parts). We have been doing lots of practice using cubes and big part-whole models to help us and have started to record some different number sentences to show our working too!

Due Thursday 8th November

This week your home learning task is to practice what we have been learning in Maths this week - using 'part whole' models to partition (split) big numbers into 2 smaller numbers (parts) and writing a number sentence to go with it.

For example: 

The part-whole models are stuck into your home learning books as usual - please come and see me if you are not sure what to do!

Please also take some time to practice this weeks spellings (stuck in reading diaries) and read some of your reading book.

On Tuesday we had a special challenge – looking after a new Jelly Baby friend for the whole day!

We gave them names and wrote some facts about them. 

We talked lots about how best to take care of them and how to be a kind friend. 

We also created a healthy packed lunch for them and designed and made them a home to live in too!

In Maths this week we have been comparing numbers using words like 'greatest' and 'smallest' and have been learning about some new symbols we can use to help us do this

These are called 'inequality symbols' - but we also know this as 'Charlie Croc': the greedy crocodile that always wants to eat the biggest number!

Over half term please take some time to learn your spelling words that have been given this term - these have been stuck into reading diaries each week and are also listed below.

You should be able to read and spell these confidently now.

Please also make sure to read your reading books to an adult - perhaps you could have a go at retelling the story to someone to see how much you can remember!

 This week we have been practising retelling the story 'Traction Man' by finishing our storymaps from last week and using these to help us remember the story.

We have also been ordering the events in the story and writing sentences to say what is happening in each in preparation for our first 'Big Write' today - I am so impressed with the effort put in by the children and am really looking forward to reading them all!

This is also stuck into home learning books as usual - 

This week we have been continuing to get to know the story 'Traction Man' by adding some actions to different parts of the story.

We have also started to create 'story maps' to help us retell the story in the right order - we will be continuing these next week before having a go at writing it ourselves!

In Maths we have been busy practising our counting and ordering of numbers, filling in missing numbers and finding one more in Year 1 and showing patterns and sequences using Dienes ("chips and peas" - tens and ones) in Year 2.

We have also all been enjoying learning to count in 10's using a song and video to help us!

In science we have started to think about different materials (what things are made out of) and have been looking at lots of objects and deciding what materials they are made of, before describing what they looked/felt like using lots of different adjectives.

We also had to sort a box of objects by the material they are made from - wood, metal, plastic, fabric or stone.

This week we got the instruments out in music and explored the different sounds they could make. We tried playing softly and loudly and then practised making different rhythms together. 

Golden Book 

In the Golden Book this week were Lilly and Ruby for consistently trying hard with ALL of their learning over the past few weeks - WELL DONE!

We also said a huge well done to TJ who has just joined us and has been trying hard to remember all of our new routines and do his best with his work in Class!

These are stuck into home learning books but please feel free to come and see me if you are not sure what to do.

Please also try to cover your new book this weekend (for example in wrapping paper or sticky-backed plastic) to protect it and keep it looking nice for the year ahead.
