Friday 16 December 2016

What a busy week we have had this week!

We began with our trip to the circus on Tuesday - everyone really enjoyed the show!

A huge WELL DONE to everybody for putting such fantastic effort in to our Christmas performances on Thursday at the village hall - I am sure you will agree all of the children did a super job acting and singing on the 'big stage'!

We have been enjoying the Christmas stories our Christmas Elves have been leaving for us this week - they certainly know what kind of stories we love to read in our class!
The children also wrote some lovely letters to Father Christmas which the Elves have taken back for him to read.

We created hats to wear to today's Christmas Lunch using only 2D shapes to make the pictures - I was so impressed to see how creative everybody was with just the circles, squares, rectangles and triangles I gave them - we had trees, snowmen, elves and even Rudolph pulling a sleigh!

Remember that on Tuesday it is Christmas jumper day and that everybody needs wellies for our walk that day - we will follow this up with hot chocolate and some Christmas films in the afternoon.

Don't forget to bring a plastic bag next week to take home all the super artwork we have made this term.

Have a lovely restful weekend!

Friday 9 December 2016

We have been getting into the festive spirit this week in Class 2 - we have been enjoying lots of stories given to us by the elves that are visiting our classroom.

They have been visiting every night and leaving shiny coins for children who have done super work or been a great friend each day.

We have also been working out how to make some snowman treats - the naughty elves left us the ingredients but no instructions! We had to work together and talked about how we would make each part and what we would use.

We enjoyed the final result very much...!

Rehearsals have been continuing for our Christmas play - all of the costumes look fantastic, thank you to everyone who has made or bought things for the children to wear.

Keep practising your lines this weekend - remember to use your big voices too!

No home learning this week - have a lovely rest in preparation for lots of Christmas fun next week!

Friday 2 December 2016

Much excitement was had in Class 2 this week when a tiny, wooden door appeared in our classroom!

This prompted some super writing and lots of WOW words to describe the door and who it might belong to.

Then on Friday we received a note and a parcel from The Christmas Elves who told us they would be visiting us to look out for all the things we have been doing - not only all our fantastic work but also looking for signs of kindness and laughter!

In the parcel was a treasure hunt and some chocolate coins - the Elves had seen all our work on money this week and thought they would set us a challenge!

First we had to work out how much money was in each pot....

Then we had to search around the room for the cards with those amounts on to find the letters to make a secret message....

GREAT WORK!

We cannot wait to see what the Elves get up to next week!

Sophia and Faith were in the Golden Book this week for settling in so well to our class and making such a great start at Wenhaston.
Well done to the rest of the class for making them feel welcome.

Home Learning:

Your home learning this week is to keep practising your lines for our Christmas play - next week we will be rehearsing without them in front of us so we can hold our props and do the actions to all the songs much more easily.

No new spellings this week - as we are approaching the end of term it is time to consolidate everything we have learned so far, so please spend some time practising ALL of the spellings given this term, in particular the ones you might have found more tricky or got wrong in previous weeks.
We will be randomly picking some words from all those learned this term for next weeks test.

Friday 25 November 2016

This week we have been working on identifying the features of some more 'silly' poems, such as rhyming words and adjectives and have been learning about words with silent letters, like knight and gnome!

We have also been thinking of our own adjectives to describe our monsters and have made up our own silly poems.

In Maths we have been working on counting in 10s and 2s and identifying odd and even numbers.
I was also really impressed with everybody who had a good try at learning their 2 times table using 'Stick 'em up' - we are getting more and more confident now which is brilliant!

Rehearsals are now underway for our Christmas performance and we are all very excited!
Letters will be sent home next week with information about costumes.

Lois was in the Golden Book this work for some great Maths work - she mastered her 2 times table over the weekend and then taught her group how to answer a tricky problem in Big Maths

Home Learning this week is to spend some time learning your lines for the Christmas play.

Begin by reading them through a few times quietly to yourself to get used to what the words say.
Then try reading them out loud to someone else – remember those big, clear voices!
Once you are confident, try it without your script!

House points will be given next week to anyone who shows us that they have been putting in some effort to learn their words.

Spellings have been given as usual.

Friday 18 November 2016

We have been enjoying lots of 'silly poems' in Class 2 this week, using our phonics to help us decode new words. We have been hunting for rhyming words and repeating patterns in the texts we read and have started to identify and use some adjectives in poems and rhymes.

In Maths we have been working on our subtraction (take-away) skills and Year 1 had great fun competing against each other in a special addition and subtraction game!

Year 2 have been working really hard with some much bigger numbers and trying to use number facts they already know, such as number bonds to 10, to help them work out missing numbers.

We had a great time walking down to Grove Piece on Thursday to see the bit of land that the Blyth Woods group will be creating a new woodland on - thank you to them and all the parents that could join us!

Samuel was in the Golden Book this week for a super piece of science work about the weather - well done!

Home Learning -
Due Thursday 24th November

Your challenge this week is to teach someone at home 'Stick 'em up' to help you learn your 2 times table.
See if you can do the whole thing without stopping...!

5 house points will be given to any children that can show me they can do this by next Thursday!

Friday 11 November 2016

This week we have been thinking about poems and rhymes - this week was World Nursery Rhyme week and so we have been learning lots of these and thinking about the rhyming words in each. We acted out these rhymes in groups too.
We also created some very funny rhymes by changing the words of 'Humpty Dumpty'!

Humpty Dumpty sat in a tree,
Humpty Dumpty fell in the sea!
All the King's horses and all the King's men,
Laughed at him and said 'Do it again!'
by Freddie

In Maths we have been focusing on measuring in cm using a ruler and have measured lots of things around our school!

On Thursday we did some problem solving - we had to build a new wall for Humpty Dumpty to sit on comfortably, that was also as tall as possible!
Some great thinking by everyone - we even had chairs added to the tops of some walls!

We were then challenged to test our walls with Humpty Dumpty sitting on top....!

Home Learning:

Due Thursday 17th November

Home Learning this week is to measure items around your house with a ruler (use your own or the paper one stuck in your book). Don't forget the 'cm' after the number!

Why not challenge yourself and see if you can ESTIMATE (make a 'clever' guess) how long each item is before measuring?

Spellings are in the blue books as usual.

Friday 4 November 2016

Welcome back!

We have been thinking about autumn this week in Class 2. We talked a lot about the different ways we celebrate in autumn - from Harvest, to Halloween and then Bonfire Night and the story of Guy Fawkes.

On Monday we made 'Invisibility Potion' for Morgana the good witch.

We had to carefully measure out each ingredient in the right order...

Then said the magic word and watched as the mixture bubbled away!

Great measuring skills everyone!

We have been thinking a lot about using ADJECTIVES (describing words) in our writing this week. We have started writing some autumn poetry using the signs of autumn we found for our home learning last week. I was so impressed with the ideas everyone came up with and we had as many as 7 adjectives in one sentence about a leaf in Year 2! WOW!

Ellie Sparkes was in the Golden Book this week for putting in 100% in every lesson and always being willing to share her ideas with others. Well done Ellie!

Home Learning

Due Thursday 10th NOVEMBER

Your home learning this week is to write some describing words (Y1) or sentences (Yr2) using adjectives about fireworks.

As we talked about in school this week, remember to use your SENSES to help you think of ‘WOW’ words…
What can you see?
What can you hear?
What can you smell?
What can you touch (careful!)?
What can you taste (what kinds of things might you eat on Bonfire Night?)?

If you are not able to go out to see some fireworks or having some at home, you could ask an adult to help you find a video on the internet to help you, or ask Mrs Flynn or Mrs Curtis to help you find one on Monday or Tuesday lunchtime.

Friday 21 October 2016

A great time was had by everybody yesterday at our autumn-themed Partnership Day at Bungay Primary School. We had time for lots of great activities like sewing felt leaves, making leave paintings, weaving colourful paper leaves and creating 'four seasons' trees with our fingers.

Have a look at some of our fantastic artwork...

Well done to everybody for super behaviour and hard work.

We concluded our work on 'Man on the moon: a day in the life of Bob' this week with a Big Write, retelling the story in our own words, remembering our capital letters and full stops and using interesting words to make our writing extra exciting. I am so impressed with how fantastic everybody's stories were - well done.

Freddie Knight was in the Golden Book this week for consistent effort and for having an ongoing positive attitude towards his learning. Well done Freddie!

Home Learning

Due WEDNESDAY 2nd NOVEMBER

Over the half term holiday, your home learning is to search for and collect signs of autumn, for example pinecones, fallen leaves (different shapes, sizes and colours), nuts and acorns. Think about the signs of autumn we have talked about in our Science lessons.
You should put them in a small resealable plastic bag or tub, but please make sure they can be easily carried into school and they are CLEAN and DRY (you might need to ask a grown up to help you check).
You should bring these in by WEDNESDAY 2nd November to be used for some autumn-themed artwork.

You also have spellings in your spelling book.
The first spelling challenge will be on Friday 4th November.

Have a lovely half term everybody - see you on 31st October!

Friday 14 October 2016

Thank you to everyone that came along to our Harvest Festival and donated items of food for the church.
A huge WELL DONE to all the children for singing and reciting their poem so well. This was a fantastic end to a great week in Class 2!

We have been working hard in maths, learning how to use a 100-square to help us with our counting on and addition/subtraction skills.

Year 1 did fantastically well in their first try at a Big Maths challenge and are looking forward to getting started after half term. Look out for the 'prompt sheets' coming home next week.

We have been working on retelling stories this week using the story 'Man on the Moon (a day in the life of Bob)'. We drew our own 'story maps' to help us remember the events and order of the story.

We then thought about how to make our writing more interesting using adjectives (describing words) and making sure we wrote about what happened in the right order.

No Golden Book this week due to our Harvest assembly, but again - a huge well done to everyone!

Home Learning
Due Thursday 20th October

In Science we have been talking about the weather. We have started to think about the seasons and what changes are happening, now that we are in Autumn.
Draw a picture and write about what clothes you are wearing today.
Then have a look at some trees where you live. What do you notice? Draw a picture and write about what you see. Is anything changing yet?

Friday 7 October 2016

This week was 'World Space Week' so nearly all of our learning this week was linked to this in some way.

In Maths we thought about the names and properties of some 2D shapes and made space-themed pictures using some of these. I was so impressed with everyone's ideas!
We also made some symmetrical aliens. It was tricky making sure we decorated both sides in exactly the same way!

We have started our new class story - 'Man on the Moon (a day in the life of Bob)' by Simon Bartrum. We have thought about what we know about the characters that we read about and also what we might think about the ones we only see in pictures. We considered what they might be thinking, feeling or saying at different times in the story.

In our topic lesson we discovered the names of some stars in our solar system and then looked at some constellations - the 'pictures' made up of stars. We created our own special constellations too...

'The ballet-dancing banana' by Sophia
'The T-Rex' by Alfie G
'The Kite' and 'The House' by Francesca

Golden Book -
This week Iris was in our Golden Book for always making sure to listen to instructions and putting in such fantastic effort this week, especially with her writing.
WELL DONE IRIS!

Home Learning -

Due Thursday 13th October
This week we thought about what characters in our story ‘Man on the Moon’ were thinking, feeling and saying.

Look at the picture of Bob. He is travelling home after his day on the moon.
Write 3 sentences about what you think Bob might be thinking, feeling and saying.

Friday 30 September 2016

This week we have concluded our work on 'Traction Man' by Mini Grey and had our first 'Big Write' session - writing our own story from our plans created last week. I was so pleased with some of the super stories, well done!

In Maths we have been working more on remembering our number bonds and doing lots of practice with 'counting on' rather than starting from 1 each time!
We had a go at some problem solving too - trying to find all possibilities and totals using given numbers.

We have continued thinking about the weather in science - this week we learned how clouds were formed - we 'huffed' on mirrors to see the water droplets in the air and then made some clouds to hang in the classroom.

We learned the names of the planets in our topic lesson this week and had to look carefully at the colour and sizes of each planet to help us order them afterwards. A tricky task but the finished solar systems look great hanging in the classroom!

Golden Book -
This week Alex was in our Golden Book for having such a positive attitude towards his learning this week and approaching each new challenge with a smile.

WELL DONE ALEX!

Home Learning -

Due Thursday 6th October

This week we learned the names of the planets in our solar system.

Please choose one of the planets in our Solar System (NOT Earth) and draw a picture to show what it looks like.
Then find out at least 3 interesting facts to write in your home learning book. You might like to ask an adult to help you look on the internet, or you could use information books at home or at your local library.

If you need to use the school computers to complete this, please let Mrs Flynn know before Thursday.
