Friday 30 September 2016

This week we have concluded our work on 'Traction Man' by Mini Grey and had our first 'Big Write' session - writing our own story from our plans created last week. I was so pleased with some of the super stories, well done!

In Maths we have been working more on remembering our number bonds and doing lots of practice with 'counting on' rather than starting from 1 each time!
We had a go at some problem solving too - trying to find all possibilities and totals using given numbers.

We have continued thinking about the weather in science - this week we learned how clouds were formed - we 'huffed' on mirrors to see the water droplets in the air and then made some clouds to hang in the classroom.

We learned the names of the planets in our topic lesson this week and had to look carefully at the colour and sizes of each planet to help us order them afterwards. A tricky task but the finished solar systems look great hanging in the classroom!

Golden Book -
This week Alex was in our Golden Book for having such a positive attitude towards his learning this week and approaching each new challenge with a smile.

WELL DONE ALEX!

Home Learning -

Due Thursday 6th October

This week we learned the names of the planets in our solar system.

Please choose one of the planets in our Solar System (NOT Earth) and draw a picture to show what it looks like.
Then find out at least 3 interesting facts to write in your home learning book. You might like to ask an adult to help you look on the internet, or you could use information books at home or at your local library.

If you need to use the school computers to complete this, please let Mrs Flynn know before Thursday.

Friday 23 September 2016

We have had such a busy week in Class 2 this week, so the days have just flown by!

We continued our work on 'Traction Man' by Mini Grey and invented new characters and settings for our own story, which we have started to plan out ready for writing next week. I am super impressed with everyone's ideas about what the 'problem' would be in their story and how it might be fixed. I am looking forward to reading the completed stories next week!

In Maths we have been working on number bonds to 10 and 20 and have been practicing counting on from 5 or 10.

The children have really been enjoying our 'Space' topic so far and we have lots more learning to fit in before half term.
This week we watched a clip of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landing on the moon and talked lots about what it would be like to be an astronaut and go into space. We pretended to visit the moon and wrote postcards home to tell our friends or family about what we saw, heard and felt.

Golden Book -
This week Reuben was in our Golden Book for consistent effort and enthusiasm in all areas, as well as making sure he completes the work set in each lesson. WELL DONE REUBEN!

Home Learning -
Due Thursday 29th September

Home Learning this week is a Maths activity which can be found in Home Learning books.
Year 1 should use the number sentences on Elmer to work out which colour to colour in that section of the picture.
Year 2 should work out which number the robots need in each hand to make a total of 20.

I have also asked that Home Learning books are covered this week if possible please, to help protect the great homework children are completing each week. This can be done with wrapping paper, sticky-backed plastic or even brown parcel paper and decorated with stickers or other pictures to personalise it - as long as these are securely attached please!

Friday 16 September 2016

We have been using the book 'Traction Man' by Mini Grey this week to explore characters and settings and practice writing simple sentences.
We described Traction Man and thought about what he might be saying at different points in the story. On Wednesday we explored the sink from the story and had to imagine what it would be like to swim through the washing up (and a few extra surprises!)
There's spaghetti in here! And a cloth....perhaps it's the Poisonous Dishcloth!

We will continue with this book next week, before moving on to some Space-themed texts.

The children are enjoying their topic so far and lots have children have brought books into the class to show which is fantastic!
Nearly everybody enjoyed their taste of 'Astronaut Ice Cream' in our lesson this week, after we watched a video of a real astronaut making lunch on the International Space Station!

In Maths we have been thinking about number and place value - ordering numbers and counting on and back. We worked with bead-strings to find different numbers and Year 2 practiced counting in jumps of 10 from any single digit number to 100 - and beyond!

We have been thinking about the weather and seasons in Science. This week we talked about the wind and explored lots of different items to see how the wind made them move. We tested whether or not they moved more when we moved more quickly around the field too.
We had a go at making our own wind catchers - great fun!

We really enjoyed sharing everyone's favourite books on Friday and we have some great mini reviews for our book corner.

Home Learning - Due Thursday 22nd September

Home Learning this week is to correct the sentences and then have a go at writing a new sentence underneath - don't forget capital letters and full stops!

Friday 9 September 2016

Welcome back everyone!

We have had a lovely week of settling in - everyone has been working really hard to remember our routines and has tried to do their best learning. Year 2 have been great role-models to the new Year 1 children - well done!

Class 2 will be learning about SPACE this term - we have already been thinking about how we could get into space and what we might see.
We designed and made our own rockets on Thursday and flew them on the field to see which designs worked best.

Counting down.... 10, 9, 8.....
...2....1....BLAST OFF!
We used our counting, measuring and positional language skills to help us.

In English we have been learning how to write 'Super' sentences, remembering capital letters, full stops and finger spaces.

The children have each had a go at our new interactive phonics game 'Teach Your Monster to Read' in school and I have sent information and log-in details home today so they can continue their adventure at home if they like!

Our Curriculum newsletter was also sent out today so you can see what we will be up to over the next few weeks.

Home Learning:

Due Thursday 15th September

The Home Learning task for this week is to write some 'Super' sentences about the pictures in your books - Year 2's should make sure they include at least one adjective in their sentences!

No spellings this week - these will begin to be sent home in the next few weeks.
